Sherri entered us in the Chili Cook-off at Year One this year, cook off date of April 17.
We decided to cook a Pork Green Chili and add beef and beans. I knew Sherri was getting serious about her recipe when FedEx showed up at our house with a twenty pound package of Hatch Green Chiles from New Mexico.
Why so many chiles? Why 35 pounds of pork, five pounds of beef, ten cans of beans?
We were going to make ten gallons of chili. I called Patti Curtis, Ron and Vicki Eubanks, Donald Pepper, and said “We need some help”, they all jumped on board. The night before while we were cutting up the chiles,I had a little taste of one. Whew! my mouth and throat were on fire for about three hours. I could not drink enough beer and water to cool down. We joked what if we win the cook-off.
The next day it was show time, there we were at the cook-off, Full Moon tent set up ( we realized quick the tent needed to be weighted down so we got that handled), “Going Green- Chili That Is” banner flapping in the wind, two big out door burners fired up with big pots on top, dressed up in Chef hats and aprons.
Sherri had the recipe in order for each food and spice to be added, set up like clock work. Sherri, Ron, Vicki, Pepper, Patti, and I were all busy working together. Ron Eubanks took the helm and made sure the chili was cooking and not burning, I was adjusting the gas keeping the burners going,
Patti was working the crowd, Vicki was organizing the booth with spoons and one ounce taster cups, Pepper was adding tomatos and spice, and Sherri was acting like an experienced conductor.
Year One was drumming up a crowd as the show cars were pulling in and the Jackson County Chamber had obviously told a lot of people about this event because the crowd was growing.
4pm hit and a line of tasters were at our booth, “Pork Green Chili with Hatch chiles from New Mexico”, if I said it once I said it five hundred times, next thing we knew people were coming back giving us there tickets for a small bowl, after about ten bowls being served and a line around our booth we knew the PEOPLE LOVED IT!
This went on for an hour or so, the tasters were serious they went down the line tasting all the chilis, we were having a ball talking it up. Next thing we knew the Chamber came by to get our tickets to see how many bowls of Chili we served which would determine which team would win peoples choice.
The team with the most tickets would win the Peoples Choice award. You can guess where this is going.
When they announced the awards, Shane Short with the chamber, went through all the judges awards and thanked all eighteen teams for coming out and then said now for what all the teams are waiting on, Peoples Choice award, Like no other chili, not even a red chili, not even a close second in site, the most tickets were given to, and the winner goes to Full Moon Sales for the Peoples Choice.
What a great afternoon, Are we going to do it next year? You will have to come out and see if we are in next year’s chili cook-off at Year one.
